Luís Jaime Mota obtained a PhD in Biology in 2001 at NOVA University Lisbon/ITQB. Afterwards, he was a post-doctoral fellow at Biozentrum, University of Basel (2001-2005) and Imperial College London (2005-2008). Since 2008, he is Principal Investigator of the Infection Biology Lab (https://sites.fct.unl.pt/infection-biology/home), first at ITQB NOVA (2008-2013) and then (since 2014) at the Applied Biomolecular Sciences Unit - UCIBIO (https://www.requimte.pt/ucibio), NOVA School of Science and Technology - NOVA FCT. His research interests are to understand molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying bacterial virulence. Over the last 19 years, he has been studying effector proteins from bacterial pathogens that cause relevant infections in humans (Chlamydia, Legionella, and Salmonella) and which possess type III or type IV secretion systems essential for virulence. As a result of his research, Luís Jaime Mota published 41 papers in peer-reviewed journals (including Science and EMBO J) and 4 book chapters, and presented > 75 oral and poster communications in international and Portuguese meetings. Regarding his experience in leading research grants, he led five research projects funded by the FCT (including an ERA-NET PathoGenoMics consortium that he coordinated) as PI, one by the European Commission, and one by the ESCMID. As mentor, Luís Jaime Mota supervised to completion 6 PhD students, and several master and undergraduate students. He is currently supervisor of 1 PhD Student and of 1 master student. In addition, he supervised 4 post-docs. He has been examiner of 26 PhD thesis (12 as main opponent) and of 12 MSc thesis. His current editorial roles are: Associate Editor of Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology (Molecular Bacterial Pathogenesis section) (since 2021), Guest Associate Editor of Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology (Bacteria and Host section) (2021-2022), and member of the Editorial Board of Microbial Cell (since 2018). Previously, he was Review Editor of Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology (Bacteria and Host section) (2016-2021) and member of the Board of Reviewers of Microbiology (2016-2010). In terms of peer-review, since 2005, he has been ad-hoc reviewer for several journals including Cellular Microbiology, eLife, EMBO Journal, EMBO Reports, Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, Molecular Microbiology, Scientific Reports and Traffic, and of research grants from the BBSRC and the Medical Research Council (UK), the MCINN (Spain), the ANR (France), and the ERC. Moreover, he was expert evaluator in the FP7 PEOPLE Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) in 2012. At an academic level, as Associate Professor at NOVA FCT, he teaches Cell Biology, Microbiology and Bacterial Pathogenesis to undergraduate and graduate students since 2012. Currently, at NOVA FCT, he coordinates the Undergraduate degree in Cell and Molecular Biology, and he is a member of the Pedagogical Council.
