María Ríos Ibáñez

I am currently a Junior Researcher at NOVA University of Lisbon, School of Science and Technology, supported by the postdoctoral Stimulus of Scientific Employment grant (CEECIND/02199/2018) since 2020. Hosted by the GeoBioTec research unit, my primary focus is on the macroevolutionary dynamics of Giraffomorpha, with additional research in biogeochemistry, applying trace elements and stable isotopes to unlock paleoenvironmental insights in fossil records. As Principal Investigator, I lead EXPL/CTA-PAL/0832/2021, a project reconstructing Miocene seasonal dynamics in Portugal. My role as Senior Researcher also extends to projects such as PTDC/CTA-PAL/2217/2021 ("Modeling the role of Iberia in Mesozoic paleobiogeography") and the Lothagam Research Project within the Turkana Basin Institute, among others. I have been the scientific coordinator at GEAL-Museo de Lourinhã since 2022, with substantial experience in museum management and science dissemination. In academia, I have directed master’s and PhD theses, including works on Miocene paleoenvironmental reconstructions and systematic reviews of Pleistocene vertebrates. Notably, I have served as the main advisor for PhD projects on Portuguese Pleistocene vertebrates (2020.05395.BD), the evolution of European hippopotamoids (2021.08458.BD), and Mesozoic marine reptiles (2021.08727.BD), all funded by FCT-NOVA. With a BSc in Biological Sciences, an MSc in Conservation and Evolution of Animal Biodiversity (University of Valencia), and a PhD (Cum Laude) in Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology, my thesis focused on a new giraffid species (Decennatherium rex) and included the first quantitative data matrix and phylogenetic tree of Giraffidae. My FPI-EEBB scholarships enabled international research stays at AMNH, NHM, and MNHN, leading to publications on giraffid morphology and new discoveries in Siwaliks giraffids. I employ CT scans for inner ear studies and 3D surface scans for reconstructions, alongside stable isotope analyses for environmental reconstructions. In my current work, I am investigating Giraffomorpha's evolutionary trajectory. Though only two species remain today, this lineage held over 70 species with diverse phenotypes. The group's well-documented fossil record makes it ideal for studying macroevolutionary dynamics, leveraging total-evidence tip-dating techniques to explore giraffid diversification and extinction drivers in the context of paleoenvironmental change.
