Bruno André Cunha de Vallêra Jacques Pedras

Bruno Pedras (PhD, 2011) is a Researcher in the Biospectroscopy and Interfaces Research Group (BSIRG) of the Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB), and an Invited Assistant Professor of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, where he was awarded several Outstanding Teaching Awards (2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022) by the Pedagogical Council of IST. He graduated in Chemistry from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, and completed a PhD in Sustainable Chemistry (2011, NOVA School of Science and Technology, FCT-UNL), with specialization in fluorescence-based optical sensors. During his post-doctoral period, Dr. Pedras specialized in advanced optical sensors for gas monitoring in aeronautical applications, both in the Chemical Optosensors & Applied Photochemistry Group of the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, and in IST, where he developed strong collaborations with industrial partners, working in projects protected by confidentiality agreements. He is the author or co-author of 19 papers in international peer review journals, 2 book chapters, 1 edited book, and two patent applications, with over 600 citations, reflecting his work in the field of fluorescence and optical sensors, and has been involved in 16 research projects, most of them related to optical chemical sensing. Dr. Pedras has been actively involved in Editorial Activities in recent years: he was invited by Springer Nature to be Volume Editor of "Fluorescence in Industry", part of the "Springer Series on Fluorescence", after which he was invited to become the Series Editor of the same collection, having published two more volumes since then; he also serves as Guest Editor for a Special Issue of MDPI "Sensors" and as Topic Editor of "Frontiers in Chemistry" and MDPI "Chemosensors". He has been a Scientific Reviewer for several Journals, since 2011. Co-authored Pedagogical Outputs include the Laboratory Manual of Physical Chemistry (in Portuguese), for the Biomedical and Biological Engineering Masters, IST. His experience as Scientific Adviser includes 2 PhD Theses (1 concluded, 1 ongoing), 4 MsC Theses (3 concluded, of which one was distinguished by the Portuguese Order of Engineers, one ongoing) along with mentoring of several undergraduate/master/PhD students; he was nominated by the Organic Chemistry PhD Department Comission of the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) as External Evaluator / Matter Specialist of 2 Doctoral Theses, having participated as Invited International Jury Member in one of them. Current Research interests include: Advanced optical sensors for gas monitoring in industry; Dual oxygen/temperature nanosensors for intracellular mapping; TADF materials for OLED/sensing applications; Disposable sensors for stem cell culture monitoring in vertical-wheel bioreactors; Spectroscopic detection of bio-signatures in planetary field analogues. Dr. Pedras coordinated a scientific expedition to the sub-Arctic region of Nunavik (Quebec, Canada) in the context of the BIOMOON Project (MIT-EXPL/SOE/0058/2019). He has been actively involved in science dissemination, being a regular participant of the European Researchers' Night, held annually in Lisbon, and also contributing to Springer Nature Sustainable Development Goals Programme with an invited blog post. He is a member of the Portuguese Chemical Society (SPQ) since 2004 and of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International) since 2017, and has been an Organizing Committee Member of 3 International Conferences.

2022/03/06 - 2022/03/18	Expedition to the sub-Arctic region of Nunavik (Quebec, Canada) in the context of the BIOMOON Project (MIT-EXPL/SOE/0058/2019). Field Mission Coordinator: Bruno Pedras. Mission: in-situ spectroscopic analysis of different types of ice, potential analogues of icy moons of Jupiter and Saturn. BIOMOON project will inform future life detection missions to solar system icy moons with a subsurface ocean. The exploration of ice is recognised within the GER of the ISECG and ESA's Space Exploration Strategy as a key step to explore the Solar System.
