Nicolas Gislain Schaeffer obtained his MSc degree in Environmental Engineering in 2012. After being awarded with an Engineering and Physical Research Council (EPSRC) PhD scholarship, he completed a PhD in Environmental Engineering at Imperial College in 2017. Between March of 2017 and December of 2019, N. Schaeffer was a post-doctoral researcher at CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials, University of Aveiro (UA). During this period, he was involved in an international ERA- MIN project regarding the recovery of critical metals from NiMH batteries recycling. Currently, N. Schaeffer is a Junior Researcher at CICECO under the NormaTransitoria framework, investigating the development, characterization, and understanding of alternative solvents for more sustainable hydrometallurgical processes using a mixed experimental and computational approach. N. Schaeffer published 45 articles in international peer reviewed multidisciplinary journals, with a focus on chemical engineering and related fields (h-index 17, 1121 total citations, Web of Science 24/05/2024). This includes 13 as corresponding author and 14 as first author. He participated in 33 oral and 29 poster communications in national and international conferences. He completed the supervision of 1 postdoctoral student, 1 PhD student, 8 MSc students and 4 BSc students and he is presently involved in the supervision of 2 Junior Researcher, 3 PhD students (including 1 in Australia as part of a cotutelle agreement), and 1 BSc students. He is a team member in 2 ongoing R&D projects, including 1 as Task leader (Total UA budget: 1,092,348 €), and the recipient of an Horizon ERC Starting grant 2023 (Total value: € 1,499,851 €).
