Patrícia de Jesus Gonçalves is a researcher at the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). Her expertise lies in the following research areas: marine biology, fisheries biology, fisheries stock assessment and modelling. In 2017, she completed her Ph.D. in Marine Sciences at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon (Portugal). Her thesis was titled “Structure and Biology of the Southern Component of Blue Whiting (Micromesistius poutassou) Population in the Northeast Atlantic.” Degree awarded with distinction summa cum laude. Since 2017, she has co-coordinated international workshops on the age reading intercalibration of blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou) within the framework of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). Starting in 2018, she has been coordinating Descriptor 3: “Commercial Fish and Shellfish” under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) for the Portuguese mainland and the Extended Continental Shelf subdivisions. In 2021, she was nominated as the national focal point in the OSPAR expert group, Fish EG. Patrícia has actively participated in and coordinated various workshops and working groups within the scope of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). Since 2019, she has been a member of the governance group for ICES SmartDots (WGSMART), an online platform developed for conducting age reading intercalibration exercises on fish otoliths. In 2023, she participated in the ICES Annual Science Conference as a co-convener of Session J: “Joining Forces for the Better Assessment of Highly Migratory and Other Wide-Ranging Species.” She is also the author of several scientific publications and reports.
