Madalena Maria Gomes de Queiroz Dias graduated in Chemical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) in 1977 and joined the Department of Chemical Engineering of FEUP as Teaching Assistant. In 1979 she started her post-graduate studies in the Department of Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, Texas, USA, where in 1984 she obtained her degree of Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in the area of Simulation of Flow in Porous Media. Between 1984 and 1988 she worked as a Research Scientist at the multinational company Schlumberger Ltd., first at Schlumberger-Doll Research, in Ridgefield, Connecticut, USA and later at Schlumberger Cambridge Research, Cambridge, UK, conducting research in the area of Characterization and Simulation of Flow in Oil Reservoirs. In 1988 she returned to FEUP where she pursued her teaching and research career, as Associate Professor from 1993. From 2013 to 2021 she assumed the direction and scientific coordination of the Associate Laboratory LSRE-LCM. From 2005 to 2010 she was part of the team that founded Fluidinova, SA, a U.Porto spin-off company. In 2022 she retired from teaching activities, maintaining her research activities at LSRE-LCM. She was actively involved in FEUP, U.Porto and other institutions management activities, namely: member of University of Porto Senate 2014-2019; member of FEUP's Scientific Council 2005-2022; member of the Chemical Engineering Department Council 2003-2022; member of the Coordinating Council of CEMUP (UP Materials Centre) since 2016; member of Scientific-Technological Council of CoLAB MORE, since 2020; member of External Advisory Board of CIMO, IPBragança, since 2017; member of Coordination Council of RMIN - Montanhas de Conhecimento, Rede Nacional de Investigação de Montanhas, since 2017. Her main areas of interest are: Mixing in chemical reactors, including micro-meso structured reactors - NETmix technology; Process modelling and simulation, including network modelling; Nano and microparticle materials, including development of continuous processes for microcapsules and Pickering emulsions; Valorisation of natural products, including extraction, refining and stabilisation processes; Application of supercritical and high pressure CO2 for extraction and refining of essential oils, sterilization processes, and production of hydrates. She is co-author of more than 120 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and book chapters, supervised 15 Ph.D. thesis, 16 Master dissertations, and 5 post-doctoral researchers. She was the Principal Investigator of 29 research projects and has participated in more than 30. She is co-author of 1 patent granted in EU and USA, 1 patent granted in Germany and USA, 1 patent granted in Portugal, and 4 other international patent applications.
