IB is an Assistant Researcher at CERIS, where she has been developing work under the strategic research lines of Ecohydraulics. IB has finished her PhD in 2012 in Environmental Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. Her background is in Environmental Engineering where she has graduated from Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Univerdade Nova de Lisboa. A master in Hydraulics and Water Resources made the bridge from Environment to Hydraulics and Hydrology. IB is also post-graduate in Sustainability Management from Lisbon School of Economics & Management (ISEG). IB research interests lies in understanding the effects of hydropower plants in freshwater system with focus on fish populations and propose actions to mitigate those impacts. Thus, IB has done an internship at SINTEF Norway (2015) to increase her knowledge on impacts on salmonid fish. Back to Portugal, IB has rehabilitated a flume from the Laboratory of Hydraulics (HL) at IST to undertake fish experiments. She has been developing research in the laboratory using CFD models and other innovative tools, such as bio-inspired sensors and video image, to understand fish-responses in laboratory environment. During her research IB has published more than 30 scientific papers in top ISI journals (20 published in the last 5-years), took part of more than 30 international and national conferences (6 by invitation). IB has undertaken the supervision of 5 PhD thesis (2 finished and 3 ongoing), 2 visitor PhD students from Univ. of Valladolid and from Tallinn Univ. of Technology), 6 master students from IST, 1 visitor master student from Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble, and 1 ERASMUS student from BOKU Univ. in Vienna. IB lectures for the FLUVIO doctoral programme as well as other advanced training courses. IB is a Guest Editor for the Sustainability Journal and River Research and Application, and has been a reviewer for more than 15 ISI international journals. IB is member of the Commission for the Ecosystems and Water (CEQUAE), from Associação Portuguesa de Recursos Hídricos, a member of the ORBEA Animal Welfare Body (AWB) from IST, University of Lisbon, and a member of the international HyPeak Network. IB has achieve funding to support her research, from which she highlights the FIThydro H2020 project (www.fithydro.eu) with 26 partners and a total of 6 million euros and the EcoPeak4Fish (265 k€) FCT project where she stands as Principal Investigator. IB has taken part on the Coordination Team for the FishPassage 2020 conference and has lead the proposal to organize the Ecohydraulics 2022 Symposium. IB was also a member of the organizing committee of CERIS Open day (2017 and 2018) which was awarded with the Best Practices R&D Award. Additionally, IB was invited to speak at the 3º Ignite Portugal in 2016 as a result of her scientific achievements.
