I graduated in Biology from the University of Lisbon in 2009 (17/20 score), subsequently enrolling in a Marine Ecology MSc at the same University (19/20 score), where I studied the thermal tolerance of coastal species (vertebrates and invertebrates) and associated vulnerability to climate change. In 2012 I started a PhD program in Sustainable Chemistry at the NOVA University of Lisbon (UCIBIO), graduating in 2016. My work was focused on the effects of ocean warming throughout the life cycle of the gilt-head sea bream using physiological, biochemical and proteomics approaches to unravel the acclimation potential of this commercially important marine fish. Concomitantly, I was dedicated to continuing my MSc work by assessing the molecular mechanisms associated with thermal tolerance and acclimation capacity in intertidal organisms from temperate and tropical regions. I was trained in animal experimentation and expanded my skills in data analysis, proteomics and marine evolution by attending advanced courses in national and foreign institutions. By the end of 2017 I joined CESAM (University of Aveiro) as a post-doctoral research fellow to study the molecular mechanisms underpinning within and transgenerational plastic responses in marine worms under a global change framework, in collaboration with Prof. Piero Calosi at the University of Québec at Rimouski (UQAR, Canada). This fostered the development of an international network of collaborators, including researchers working at DFO (Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada), University of Plymouth (UK), University of Gothenburg (Sweden) and University of Connecticut (USA), with whom we have ongoing work. Meanwhile, I was awarded a R2 level researcher contract (2020-2023) and subsequently an R3 level researcher contract (2023-present) by the Foundation for Science and Technology (8% success rate). I have been actively involved in 6 national (1 as task leader and local PI at the University of Aveiro), 1 bilateral Portugal-Germany (Working Group leader) and 2 international funded projects and I am a reviewer for over 20 international journals and 4 funding agencies. I have won several awards including the Research Stimulus Program 2012 (Foundation Calouste Gulbenkian), Ocean Award 2013 (Oceanography Centre, FCUL) and L'Oreal Medals of Honor for Women in Science 2018 (L'Oreal, FCT/UNESCO). As a consequence, my work has been highlighted in >60 media news (newspapers, news online, magazines, radio and TV interviews). I am currently supervising/co-supervising 9 students (5 PhD; 2 MSc and 1 Erasmus+ Internship) and have completed the supervision of another 7 MSc and 1 BSc. My major achievements include 46 research articles (Scopus H-index 20, 1602 citations, 46 co-authors from 12 institutions including in Portugal, Germany, Canada, Switzerland, Brazil, Norway), one book chapter, 12 datasets published, 7 invited talks (including TEDxAveiro 2019), 4 individual grants funded and several awards. Overall, I have attracted > 360 000 euros in competitive funding (including projects, fellowships/salary grants and human resources).
