RENATO DUARTE (ORCID: 0000-0001-6099-667X) is a researcher at the Center for Neurosciences and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra, Portugal (CNC-UC), working in the domain of systems and computational neuroscience, under the thematic line "Neuroscience and Disease" at the Associate Laboratory CIBB - Center for Innovative Biomedicina and Biotechnology. With a joint doctoral degree in Computational Neuroscience from the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and the University of Edinburgh (confered in 2018, as part of the Erasmus Mundus joint doctoral program EuroSPIN), he conducted his doctoral research under the guidance of Abigail Morrison (Forschungszentrum Jülich), including several mobility periods and research stays at the Institute for Adaptive and Neural Computation, University of Edinburgh (hosted by Peggy Sèries, Matthias Hennig and Mark van Rossum), the Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience, Ruhr-University Bochum (hosted by Sen Cheng) and the Max-Plank Institute for Psycholinguistics (Neurobiology of Language group, hosted by Peter Hagoort and Karl Magnus Petersson). After completing his doctoral degree with highest honours, he became a PostDoctoral researcher at the Institute for Neuroscience and Medicine (INM-6) and Institute for Advanced Simulation (IAS-6), Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany. He later served as an Assistant Professor at the Radboud University, Nijmegen, and researcher at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behavior. His primary focus is on learning and memory in neocortical circuits, with a strong emphasis on synaptic plasticity and population dynamics. His research aims to bridge circuit architecture (particularly biochemical composition), dynamics and information processing. Despite being at an early career stage, he has made substantial contributions to the field, as evidenced by 18 peer-reviewed publications, including in high-impact journals (PNAS, Journal of Physiology or eLife). As a mentor, he has supervised 3 MSc theses and co-supervised 4 PhD theses. He has taught various courses across different Universities and Faculties and is a very dedicated and engaged researcher and mentor, according to peer feedback. He has participated as an affiliated researcher in 3 international consortia and led 2 large computing projects at the Jülich Supercomputing Center. His expertise in the field are internationally recognized as demonstrated by regular peer-review invitations to prominent journals, guest lecturing invitations to some international meetings and an international award in recognition of his doctoral research. He has also organized international workshops and tutorials and is a well established researcher in the fields of computational neuroscience and neuro-inspired computing.
