Ana Dinis

Ana Dinis holds a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Madeira, awarded in 2014. Her research primarily focused on the ecology of marine megafauna, with particular emphasis on the social structure, group dynamics, residency, movement patterns, and human impacts on highly social species in the Macaronesian region. Over the past 20 years, she has developed extensive expertise in cetacean identification, photo-identification data analysis, and various survey techniques, including land-based, nautical, and aerial methods. She was a co-founder of a team dedicated to marine megafauna studies, in 2016, within MARE-ARDITI. In the past years, this team greatly contributed to the present knowledge of marine mammals in the Macaronesia region, publishing some of the first information about cetacean ecology and ecotoxicology, in this geographic area. Independently, she secured approximately 400 000€ in the last 6 years for equipment, fieldwork, and fellowships. She has participated in more than 20 research projects, national and international, where she served as the PI, coordinator, or co-coordinator in several. Recently, her work has expanded to include research on plastic pollution, emerging contaminants, and ecosystem services in oceanic environments. She has also gained experience in stakeholder engagement and co-creation processes in ocean conservation. She has co-supervised PhD students, master’s students, and research fellows, contributing to developing the next generation of scientists. Her scholarly contributions include more than 40 peer-reviewed publications, several of which are in high-impact journals (e. g Environmental Pollution, Science of the Total Environment, Food Chemistry), two books, 16 oral presentations, and over 50 conference posters. Since 2021, Ana has been a member of the Marine Mammal Expert Group (OMMEG) under ICG-COBAM / BDC for the OSPAR Commission, and she has been an invited Associate Professor at the University of Madeira since 2023. Additionally, she is a board member at the Mare-Madeira research unit, where she co-leads the Ecosystem Services and Blue Economy research group.
