Paulo Nuno Centeio Matafome holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences since 2012 (Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra). He is an Auxiliary Professor of Physiology at the Polytechnic University of Coimbra and an integrated member of the Coimbra Institute of Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR), Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB), University of Coimbra. He has published 103 research articles (9 as the first author and 25 as the main author) and 4 book chapters (>2400 citations, h factor=28). He has supervised or co-supervised 12 PhD students (5 concluded), 22 MSc students (20 concluded), and 21 BSc Students. He has participated in 20 Research Projects (3 as principal Investigator, 1 as Co-Principal Investigator and 15 as Team Member). Paulo is the co-coordinator of the Horizon Europe PAS GRAS project. He is a Deputy Editor-in-chief of the journal Diabetology. Paulo Matafome has collaborations with several Departments of the Local Health Unit of Coimbra for the recruitment of patients and blood and adipose tissue collection. He also collaborates with Brazilian, Spanish and Portuguese groups in the metabolic programming field. Paulo collaborates with the Institute of Health-Applied Nuclear Sciences, to develop new early imaging biomarkers for metabolic diseases and their complications. Moreover, he has been particularly active in studying the neuroendocrine mechanism controlling the gut-adipose tissue crosstalk as a promising therapeutic strategy to prevent obesity, adipose tissue dysfunction and its consequences. He has access to human blood and adipose tissue samples, state-of-the-art bioimaging methods (human and animal PET and MRI), animal models of diabetes (Goto-Kakizaki colony) and his lab has developed methods to evaluate angiogenesis and adipose tissue blood flow ex vivo and in vivo.
