Dr. José Bernardo Gama is an Investigator at the CICS-UBI (Health Sciences Research Centre - University of Beira Interior). He has published 9 manuscripts in international peer-reviewed journals, 3 of which as a first or co-first author. His papers have a total of 337 citations, which give him an h-index of 9. Dr. Gama graduated in Biochemistry in 2008, after one full year of internship in the lab of Prof. Ferreira (ICBAS, Porto), where he carried out his senior year research project. He studied, the efficiency and safety of the vaccination trials against Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection, using the GBS virulence factor, GAPDH, as an antigenic target. In 2009, Dr. Gama was awarded a fellowship from FCT to pursue a PhD in Prof. Pedrosa's lab (ICVS, Braga), where he studied the molecular cytopathogenesis induced by mycolactone, the toxin of Mycobacterium ulcerans. His proteomic analysis revealed that cytoskeleton dynamics and collagen synthesis are processes sensitive to mycolactone (Gama JB et al., PLoS Negl Trop Dis 2014), which was also found to trigger a BIM-mediated apoptosis. After receiving his PhD in 2014, Dr. Gama joined Dr. Gassmann's lab (IBMC, Porto) to dissect the molecular mechanisms used by Dynein-1 adaptors to recruit the motor machinery to the different cargos. His studies contributed to the current understanding of how functionally distinct adaptors with diverse structures use a similar mechanism to engage the molecular motor Dynein-1 and its cofactor dynactin (GAMA JB et al., J Cell Biology 2017; and Celestino R*, Henen MA*, GAMA JB*, et al., PLoS Biology 2019; *: Equal contribution). In 2020, Dr. Gama joined the group of Dr. Tiago Dantas (i3S, Porto), to study how mutations in regulators or subunits of Dynein-1 and Dynein-2 result in severe developmental disorders, such as microcephaly and skeletal ciliopathies, respectively. Since 2021, he is collaborating with Prof. Maia (CICS-UBI), to study the role of STEAP1 on the oncobiology of prostate cancer in order to evaluate its potential as biomarkers and/or therapeutic target.
