Maria Inês Teodoro is currently a PhD student at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon, with a specialisation in Pharmacoepidemiology, having already completing the first year (curricular part). Her current line of research focuses in assessing the effectiveness, in real-world context, of innovative therapies for the treatment of breast cancer in Portugal, whose efficacy has only been established based on clinical trials and are particularly costly. Furthermore, Maria Inês is working in the Epidemiology Unit of Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa Francisco Gentil (IPOLFG), where she is a cancer registrar and manages real-world evidence (RWE) projects to access therapeutic effectiveness of cancer treatments, and retrospective cohort studies on solid tumours. Registry analysis enables annual information on cancer incidence distributed by geographic region, age and sex. She is also a RWE junior research consultant at Instituto de Saúde Baseada na Evidência, where she is involved in a variety of projects and is currently working in the field of digital health. More recently, she became the Pharmacy Technical Director of one of BBraun’s Haemodialysis Clinics. During the year of 2022, she worked as a Hospital Pharmacist at Hospital Beatriz Ângelo, allowing her to develop clinical and pharmacological skills in the fields of oncology, pulmonology, neurology, cardiology and internal medicine. In 2021, Maria Inês completed her Integrated Master's Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a final grade of 16, having received two awards for the best student of the class of 2016-2021 (Academic Merit Award 2020/2021 from Direção Geral do Ensino Superior and Prémio Sociedade Farmacêutica Lusitana 2020/2021 from Ordem dos Farmacêuticos). Her Master's Thesis (graded with 20 out of 20) was developed during a one-year internship at the National Oncological Registry/Epidemiology Unit (IPOLFG) and focused on assessing the therapeutic effectiveness of medicines used in advanced breast cancer, resorting to real-world data. From this project, she has recently published an article in a peer-reviewed indexed journal, entitled “Real-world effectiveness of aromatase inhibitors and fulvestrant in HR+/HER2- advanced breast cancer: a snapshot of the last two years before conventional use of CDK4/6 inhibitors in a Portuguese institution". In the context of this work, it was also possible to assess the completeness and exhaustiveness of the National Cancer Registry in a cohort of advanced breast cancer women, which led to the publication of an abstract in an international journal. During the Integrated Master’s, she was also able to develop a pilot study to access the potential impact of education about cancer screening programs and, later, and to conduct the study “Application of Cannabis Use Intention Questionnaire to First Year University Students”. Both studies were presented at international congresses and resulted in published abstracts in international journals. Maria Inês already attended to a course about Measuring Value in Oncology and a post graduate course about Economic Evaluation in Epidemiology. She is also enrolled in the Introductory Course In Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, from The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, that will take place in June 2024.
