Susana M. Fernandes graduated in Medicine in 2004 (Faculdade de Medicina Universidade de Lisboa), and specialized in Internal Medicine in 2014 and in Critical Care Medicine in 2017. During her resident training in Internal Medicine obtained a PhD degree in Clinical Immunology, with a thesis focused on gut associated lymphoid tissue homeostasis in HIV-1 and HIV-2 infected patients. After completing her residency in Internal Medicine in 2015, she has been dedicated to Critical Care. She has been involved and coordinated several outcome research projects in this field, developed and became responsible for critical care teaching at Faculdade de Medicine da Universidade de Lisboa and pursued translational studies as a researcher at Instituto de Medicina Molecular. Since her fist days as a critical care physician, she has been always particularly interested in organ repair after injury, and overall recovery. She is now focused on understanding persistent critical illness associated with immune dysfunction and long term outcomes.
