Joana is a modern materials conservator currently enrolled in a Ph.D. (2022-now) in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, in the Department of Conservation and Restoration at NOVA School of Science and Technology (Portugal). She was awarded a 4-year FCT doctoral grant (2021.04565.BD) to study synthetic-coated fabrics in fashion collections and fill in the urgent need for adequate preventive conservation solutions for their preservation. Joana also holds a BSc (2017) and a MSc (2020) from the same institution, having specialized in the conservation and restoration of modern and contemporary materials. As a master student and then as a Research Assistant (2018-2021), Joana has integrated a multidisciplinary and international team in the financed project "PlasCO2 - Green CO2 Technologies for the Cleaning of Plastics in Museums and Heritage Collections", in which she researched a novel and sustainable methodology based on supercritical carbon dioxide for the consolidation treatment of historical foams. In 2021, she was awarded an Erasmus+ grant to carry out a professional internship at the University of Glasgow (Scotland, UK), where she developed her skills in the identification, documentation and assessment of synthetic materials in an archival context. Joana has also participated in the funded project "Glossy Surfaces: The Conservation of TPUs in Fashion", led by an international consortium of museums and scientific partners researching TPU-coated fabrics in fashion collections and developing adequate conservation strategies. Joana has worked with several museums and has been actively engaged in the study of the problematic conservation of synthetic materials present in their collections. She seeks to apply her scientific and analytical expertise to pursue adequate solutions for the care and preservation of these materials.
