Nuno Mendes, BSc, MSc, is a Research Technician at Instituto de Inovação e Investigação em Saúde (i3S) da Universidade do Porto. He received his degree as a Pathology Technician in Escola Superior de Saúde do Porto and Master degree in Medicine and Molecular Oncology in Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto in 2007. He started to work in research at Instituto de Patologia e Imunologia Molecular da Universidade do Porto (IPATIMUP) in 2003 in projects studying gastric pathology associated with Helicobacter pylori infection. In 2009 had a work contract at Ipatimup working in cancer animal models (xenograft and transgenic models) as well as on establishing the Ipatimup´s Bank of Cell Lines. Nuno Mendes has participated in more than 28 papers in peer-reviewed journals. His participation in papers and research projects was mostly related with his expertize in the animal experimentation field and histology/immunohistochemistry, since the design of experiments to the development of in vivo models of cancer and/or testing of new drugs and the participation in the histological characterization of the samples. At the moment, Nuno Mendes is a Team Member of the Histology and Electron Microscopy Scientific Platform and also Responsible for Ipatimup`s Cell Line Bank at i3S.

Course / Discipline taught

Academic session Degree Subject (Type) Institution / Organization
2023/04/11 - 2023/04/14 The main aim of this course is to present the fundamentals of organoid models, specifically intestinal, gastric, and lung models. Participants will learn the basic principles of working with these models, and how to culture and maintain them. Moreover, they will be instructed on how to plan and run experiments using organoids, as well as on methods to analyze experimental data/ results. Microfluidics and organs-on-chip will also be explored. The specific protocols used for imaging, molecular biology, and histology using organoids will be covered.
