Joana Matos graduated and holds a Master's Degree in Food Engineering, specialized in Food Safety and Quality, at the University of Lisbon Institute Superior de Agronomia in 2014, and completed a PhD degree in Biochemistry (Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Biochemistry) at the University of Lisbon Faculty of Sciences in 2022. She is a Postdoc Researcher at Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere, I.P. (IPMA) and an Associate Researcher within the Emergent Biotechnologies and Seafood Processing Team of Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR). Her main areas of scientific research focuses on food science & nutrition. Particularly, in upgrading undervalued marine resources, mainly microalgae and seaweeds, through the bioprospection of bioactive compounds and nutrients, study of biological activities (such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-hypercholesterolemic), risk-benefit assessment and bioaccessibility of bioactive compounds, nutrients and contaminants. Additionally, she works on the development of novel healthy algal-based products for human consumption by analyzing their nutritional potential and impact on human health. She has published over 22 peer-reviewed articles in international indexed scientific journals, with over 696 citations and an h-index of 13, having participated in several national and international scientific conferences. She has collaborated in international (ALGARED +, AQUAFISH0.0) and national ( I9 + PROALGA, NewFood4Thought, AQUAMAX, PHYCOSPT) R&D projects.
