I am FCT-Auxiliary Researcher at CIIMAR (https://www2.ciimar.up.pt; Portugal) and I collaborate with the MEDRECOVER team (http://www.medrecover.org; Spain). I work in the areas of Natural and Biological Sciences with emphasis on Biodiversity Conservation and Marine Biology. Integrating population genetics, genomics, field monitoring and experimental ecology, I study the molecular ecology and evolution of temperate habitat-forming corals (Mediterranean and Atlantic). My ultimate goal is to understand the forces underlying the intraspecific diversity in these species to promote their conservation and, thereby, the conservation of associated biodiversity-rich communities. I address two main questions: i) What are the processes shaping and maintaining the patterns of neutral and selected genetic diversity? ii) How genetic factors and eco-evolutionary processes are driving the response of individuals and populations to anthropogenic climate change? I translate obtained results in management recommendations which can be used to improve conservation efforts (e.g. protected areas). In parallel, I am involved in long term biodiversity surveys focused on Mediterranean marine animal forest dominated by gorgonians. I am also taking part in literature surveys reviewing for instance the impact of climate change on Mediterranean biodiversity or the macro genetic pattern in marine habitat forming species. I defended my PhD at the Aix-Marseille University (France) in 2010 during which I pioneered the molecular ecology of Mediterranean octocorals. I did different postdoctoral contracts between Spain (Institut of Marine Sciences, ICM-CSIC) and Portugal (Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research; CIIMAR) between 2011 and 2018, with two contracts from projects (between 2011-2012 and 2017-2018 at the ICM) and one postdoc fellowship (FCT postdoc fellowship between 2012-2017 at CIIMAR; SFRH/BPD/74400/2010). Strengthening the interdisciplinarity of my research, I pioneered the genomics in octocorals. I supervised or co-supervised > 20 students (under-graduated, master and including 3 PhD student, 1 on-going) from different universities (Aix-Marseille University and Sorbonne University Campus Pierre & Marie Curie in France; Zagreb University in Croatia; Barcelona University in Spain, Universidad de Magallanes in Chile). I was involved in the committee of 3 PhD students (Spain, Tunisia and Chile). I was involved in different academic courses in French (Aix-Marseille University), Spanish (Universitat de Barcelona) and Portuguese (Universidad do Porto) universities. I also taught during a summer school dedicated to the marine restoration of rocky Mediterranean communities organized in the framework of the H2020 MERCES project in 2019. I took part in >20 national or international projects, in which, I was in charge of the population genetics/genomics part from grant writing to publications (MERCES; SMART; MedDIVERSA; BIOROCK). I coordinate(d) or co-coordinate(d) 5 international projects (PERFECT, MIMOSA, CoGeCo, RedCor-Biogenoma, DeepEvo) and I am currently involved in 3 of them (FUTUREMARES, BLUEFORESTING, COAST). I reviewed > 50 papers for > 15 journals. I was involved in the panel of experts for the Israel Science Foundation (2012), for the French Institute for Sea Exploitation (IFREMER; 2020, 2023) and for the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (2021). I have > 50 congress contributions and 5 invited seminars. I organized a workshop during the ImarCo Congress (2019). I published >50 papers (17 as first or last author), and 4 book chapters (1 as first Author). My H-index is 30 (I-10= 40). The most frequent terms in my curriculum Ciência Vitae in the context of scientific, technological and artistic-cultural outputs are: Marine biodiversity; Global change; Eco-evolutionary dynamics; Population genetics; Field ecology; Experimental ecology; Genomics; Field monitoring; Marine Protected Areas.
