Joana Tavares de Oliveira is an Assistant Professor at the Universidade Lusófona (Lisboa). She holds a PhD in Veterinary Sciences (spontaneous pet models of human cancer), from the ICBAS School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University of Porto, where she has been invited as an Affiliated Professor, since 2013, following the completion of her PhD studies. She was a PhD FCT Fellow in a research project with the University of Utrecht (Netherlands). She is an associated researcher at CEAD Francisco Suárez. More recently she teaches Criminal Law as she is in her final year as a PhD student in Law (working on an “Animals and Criminal Law” thesis that emphasizes the “One Health” perspective). She was President of the Animal Welfare Body at the Medical Research Center of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (between 2017 and 2018). She is a member (serving as a legal consultant) of the Ethics and Animal Welfare Committee of the FMV ULusófona (since 2021). As a researcher, she developed much of her work in human and animal comparative oncobiology (between 2006 and 2019) at IPATIMUP/i3S-Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (classified by FCT as “Excellent”), having done collaborative work in the USA (Texas), Utrecht (Netherlands) and in England (Norwich). She is a founding member of the “One Health” focused Portuguese Society for Innovation in Microbiome and Probiotics (SPIMP) and is currently President of the General Assembly of this society. She is an author of several scientific articles published in indexed international journals and international book chapters. In her professional activities, she interacted with more than 50 collaborators, many of which international, in co-authoring scientific works. Currently, her main research areas are Criminal Law, Animal Law and Health Law, and she maintains her interest and scientific collaborations in spontaneous animal models for human disease such as cancer, interstitial cystitis and diabetes, supporting the “One Health” approach.
