Amelia Almeida is Associate Professor (tenured) in the Department of Chemical Engineering of Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal. She has a PhD in Materials Engineering from Universidade Tecnica de Lisboa and develops her research activity in the Laser-Assisted Synthesis and Processing Group of CeFEMA - Center of Physics and Engineering of Advanced Materials (http://cefema.tecnico.ulisboa.pt). She coordinates the research group since November 2023. Amelia is a Professor of Materials Science, Phase Transformations, Surface and Coatings Technologies and Materials Selection and Design and has considerable experience in the supervision of MSc and PhD students. Her research interests focus on laser surface modification of materials for enhanced functional properties (wear, corrosion, adhesion, wettability, optical) and on the study of the structure and properties of laser processed materials. Her research activities have concentrated on the laser-assisted synthesis of advanced alloys for biomedical applications, synthesis of micro and nanocomposite materials, surface nanotexturing of materials for wear, optical and biological applications, and on additive manufacturing by laser direct printing (Ni-based alloys manufacturing and repair; precipitation steels; high entropy alloys). More recently, she has developed a collaboration with researchers from IPFN in the design and synthesis of graphene-based and other 2D nanomaterials and composites, using plasma-assisted methods. She has strong background knowledge on microstructural characterization by electron microscopy, mechanical and tribological properties of materials and has been appointed Deputy Director of MicroLab - Electron Microscopy Laboratory facility of IST, since 2015. In 2010-2017 she coordinated at IST the International PhD Program IDS-FunMat, funded by the Erasmus Mundus Program. Since 2022 Amélia is Coordinator of the Graduation Program in Materials Engineering at IST, Universidade de Lisboa.
