Rita Cabrita graduated in Zootechny Engineering from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, Vila Real, Portugal, in 1997, completed a Master degree in Animal Production from the same University, in 2000, and completed a PhD degree in Veterinary Sciences, from School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University of Porto (ICBAS-UP), in 2004. In 1998, she received the University Senate Award, Eng. António de Almeida Award, and a Merit Award. She is currently an Associate Professor at ICBAS-UP, where she is responsible for the curricular units of Animal Nutrition in the Integrated Master in Veterinary Medicine, in the Aquatic Sciences BsC and in the Master in Marine Sciences - Marine Resources, also collaborating in the curricular units of Animal Physiology of the Biochemistry BsC and General Agriculture and Ecology in the DVM master. She is a permanent member of the Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry (LAQV), of the Network of Chemistry and Technology (REQUIMTE). At ICBAS-UP, she is member of the scientific committee of the PhD course in Animal Science and of the BSc in Aquatic Sciences, of the steering committee of the Sustainable Animal Nutrition and Feeding (SANFEED) Program, PhD course in Animal Science in an industrial setting, of the Follow-up Committee of the PhD Course in Aquatic Sciences - Biology and Ecology, and of the bioterium monitoring committee. She had responsibilities and participated in several research projects both national and international, including co-promotion projects with industrial partners in the area of animal nutrition of both production and companion animals. She supervised/co-supervised 4 Post-Doc and 4 PhD students and is currently supervising/co-supervising 4 PhD students, including in an industrial setting. She authored five book chapters, and eighty one scientific articles published in international peer-reviewed journals, in the field of animal nutrition. Her main research interest is animal nutrition and feeding (livestock and companion animals), particularly the study of alternative feed resources and feeding strategies with high nutritional and functional value to increase sustainability, decrease environmental impact, and improve animal health and animal products. She is a full member of the Ordem dos Engenheiros (Colégio de Engenharia Agronómica).
