HELENA DANIELA RIBEIRO TORRES

Helena R. Torres is an auxiliar researcher at 2AI-IPCA since October 2023. In June 2023, she received a Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minho. Her Ph.D. thesis focused on the development of a smart framework for continuous 3D assessment of head disturbances from fetal to infancy period. Due to her work in her Ph.D. project, Helena received the ESPR Young Investigator START-UP Award. In 2016, she received an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minho. Her dissertation was focused on the project entitled "Kidney Segmentation in 3D US images", where real-time medical image processing methods were explored. Before initiating her Ph.D., she received a research scholarship under the University of Minho/Bosch partnership, working on the project "INNOVCAR: Innovation for Intelligent Vehicles." Afterward, she worked on the "SmartOrthosis" project at 2AI-IPCA. Currently, her main interests are imaging processing, computer vision, deep learning, and biomedical applications. Her achievements include 18 publications in international peer-reviewed journals (6 as first author, 12 as co-author), 2 provisional patent applications, 31 contributions to international conference proceedings, 8 abstracts presented at congresses, 3 publicly available datasets, 6 oral presentations at international/national conferences, 5 posters at international conferences, 6 awards at international events, and 4 academic excellence scholarships. She is also a team member of 5 funded projects. Finally, since 2019, she is a guest lecturer at a higher education institute. She also supervised three bachelor students (in the ambit of internships in different companies), supervises six bachelor students, co-supervises one master student, and participated in multiple academic juris.
