Erin M Telley, known scientifically as Erin M Tranfield, is the founder and currently the Head of the Electron Microscopy Facility at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência. Dr Tranfield completed her Doctor of Philosophy in 2007 at the University of British Columbia in Canada before doing a 2 year Post-Doctoral Fellowship at NASA Ames Research Center in California, USA and 3.5 year Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany. She has also completed a postgraduate Certificate in the Summer Session Program in 2006 at the International Space University and Dr Tranfield has been a core lecturer at the International Space University since 2011. She has published 18 journal articles, 2 book chapters and 5 educational articles for teachers. Dr Tranfield has given dozens of lectures in Portuguese PhD and MSc training programs, she has organized 7 events, several of which where international events abroad and she has participated in many microscopy events within the Portuguese community. She plays an active role in the Electron Microscopy Community in Europe, contributing to conferences and seminars as well as supporting these events through session organization. This important role was recognized through her election to be the President of the Portuguese Microscopy Society (2020-2023). Dr Tranfield has supervised 1 MSc dissertation and co-supervised a second MSc dissertation. Her main area of research is centered around the technical aspects of electron microscopy and how this can support the research that is being carried out within Portugal. Broadly speaking, her expertise lies in the areas of Medical and Health Sciences with emphasis on Medical Biotechnology and Technologies Involving the Manipulation of Cells, Tissues, Organs or the Whole Organism. She also has experience and knowledge in the Natural sciences with emphasis on Biological Sciences, Cell Biology, and Molecular Biology. Dr Tranfield and the facility that she heads support a huge array of biological research within the Portuguese community which has lead to co-authorship of scientific papers with over 169 collaborators and a long list of acknowledgements within other scientific papers.
