Alfredo Pereira is a developmental psychologist and currently a Researcher at CTS/Uninova, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where he leads an R&D contract for the European Space Agency. He is also a collaborator of CIPsi, at University of Minho. He graduated in 2009 with a dual Ph.D. degree in Psychology and Cognitive Science at Indiana University Bloomington, and in 1998 with a Licenciatura (5 year degree) in Informatics Engineering, at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. His research is concentrated on two domains: (1) visual perception in infants and (2) social coordination in infancy and early childhood. In the first domain he started in 2015 a research line at CIPsi on development of biological motion perception. This theme has produced novel work on global human motion perception using preferential looking and fNIRS. The topic of self-selected visual experience and how it relates to learning about object shape (12-14) was started during his doctoral work and later funded by a FCT-funded project where he was the PI (121494/2010). In the second domain he studies in a larger context of interacting with a caregiver, how sensory-motor experiences stabilize attention to objects and scaffold visual object learning. In the context of his previous Marie Curie Fellowship at UM he started a research line on turn-taking in parent-child social interactions and how whole body rhythms may scaffold social coordination. This empirical work focuses on unconstrained realistic tasks, where children are actively engaged with physical objects and with social partners. To that end he developed and co-developed new experimental methods. This work led to his funding by a FCT IF (IF/00217/2013) and a funded grant that finished in 2019 (1530/2014). He has extensive experience in R&D projects and managing research teams: was part of 13 projects, 3 as PI. From 2000 to 2003 he coordinated 3 R&D projects for European Space Agency and a team of 5 researchers. From 2006 to 2010, while at IUB, he mentored the research of 50 advanced undergraduate students. Currently he leads a team of 3 graduate students (funded by a FCT fellowship) and 2 full-time research assistants funded by a R&D contract with the European Space Agency. He was funded throughout his graduate and post-doctoral career and was awarded PhD fellowships from the Fulbright Commission, FCT, and Gulbenkian Foundation, and a post-doctoral fellowship from FCT from 2010 to 2012, and Marie Curie IIF in 2012. He was also awarded a FCT IF in 2014 and a FCT Welcome-II position in 2011 that he declined. In ¿98 he received a best student award from UNL.
