Daniel Simão is a Lab Head at the Animal Cell Technology Unit of IBET's Health & Pharma Division. D. Simão graduated in Biology (University of Lisbon) and holds an MSc in Molecular Genetics and Biomedicine (NOVA School of Science and Technology). Obtained his PhD in Bioengineering Systems from the MIT-Portugal Doctoral Program in 2016. Having pursued his PhD studies in the Advanced Cell Models Laboratory (iBET and ITQB NOVA), D. Simão focused mostly on the development of stem cell-based 3D in vitro models of central nervous system for preclinical research. His work contributed for the establishment of neural differentiation methodologies based on stirred culture systems, interrogating functional aspects of neuron-glia interactions and applying such models for evaluation of viral vectors for gene therapy. Joined the Adenovirus Receptors, Trafficking and Vectorology Laboratory at IGMM (Montpellier, France) for a post-doc, working on the construction and production of CAV-2 vectors for gene transfer to central nervous system. In 2017, Daniel became Senior Researcher at iBET responsible for the development of a microfluidics-based antibody discovery platform. As Lab Head since 2021, Daniel coordinates a team working on R&D projects for biopharmaceutical industry, focusing on biologics research. D. Simão has authored 18 manuscripts, 3 conference papers and 1 book chapter; Has received 5 awards and/or honors and participated as speaker in 11 national and international conferences. Daniel has been responsible for the co-supervision of one PhD Student and has participated as invited lecturer in Master and PhD programs (NOVA Medical School and ITQB/iBET). Was the Principal Investigator of the FCT funded project AstroReact and the internally-funded (iBET) project FibroTag, in the fields of development of human cell models for preclinical research and antibody discovery; Participated as team member in several other publicly funded research projects (FCT and EC), and operates as project manager in research services with the biopharmaceutical industry.
