Cláudia Leopoldina Mieiro completed her PhD in Chemistry in 2011/03/14 at the University of Aveiro, MSc in Ecology in 2001/06/19 at the University of Coimbra, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia and Graduation in Biology in 1997/09/17 at the University of Coimbra, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia. She has a post-graduation in Planning, Urbanism and Environmental Law (Univ. Coimbra) and a Course in Laboratory Animals Sciences-Aquatic Organisms obtaining the category C accreditation (FELASA). Presently, she is a Researcher at the Centro de Estudos do Ambiente e do Mar (CESAM), Department of Biology of the University of Aveiro. Published 41 articles in ISI journals (94% in the top 25% journals, 33% with international collaboration) and organised 11 events (workshops, seminars, school activities, summer school). She started her research line - Reprotoxicity of emerging contaminants, within the FisoTox lab, where she supervises 2 PhD students (1 co-supervisor, UPV/Spain), 1 PhD internship, 1 MSc and 1 BSc students. She supervised 2 postdocs, 1 PhD student internship (UCAR/Tunisia), 1 MSc fellow, 3 MSc students (2 co-supervision, 1 from UPV-Spain and 1from UNINA/Italy), 16 BSc students, 3 Erasmus+, and mentored 1 PhD and 3 MSc students. Has received 1 award and 1 honour. She is a team member in 2 projects, one EU HE Widening project EPIBOOST and PT Mar2030 RePoR. She was the Principal investigator in 1 project and was a team member in 5 projects (task coordinator in 3). Participated as an examiner in 4 PhD juries, 3 as main arguer/external arguer, 1 PhD project defence, 4 MSc (main arguer), and 3 BSc (main arguer). Since 2020, teaches General Physiology classes (CU 47109) for 3 BSc degrees at the Department of Biology, University of Aveiro (UA), and in 2022 started lecturing Physiology (CU 40330). She lectured a class for the MSc in Applied Ecology (UA, 2017) and taught Natural Sciences to the 5th grade in 1999. She has been a member of the ICES-Working Group on Biological Effects of Contaminants since 2022 and a member of the COST action PRIORITY (CA20101). She was interviewed for Hakai magazine (Canada) & UNDARK (USA) and had 1 podcast (Antena1). She works in the area(s) of Natural Sciences with emphasis on Earth and Environmental Sciences with emphasis on Reproductive Biology and Physiotoxicology. Her main scientific interests are personal care products (e.g. nanoparticles, UV filters); toxicity; bioaccumulation; biomarkers; mixtures; marine organisms; realistic concentrations; marine and estuarine ecosystems; external fertilization; sperm quality; mitochondrial function; DNA integrity and gametogenesis.

This one-day workshop aims to increase the knowledge on non-essential metals toxicity in diverse organisms, improving the understanding of their specific responses to those contaminants. The use of distinct approaches as monitoring tools to predict the risk to different communities and to the entire ecosystem will be addressed as well as the usefulness and applicability of the most widely used biomarkers, as well as the advantages and limitations of both laboratory- and field-based strategies.
