Ricardo Pereira (RP) holds a PhD in Earth Sciences from Cardiff University (UK) and is a researcher at GeoBioTec - NOVA School of Science and Technology, committed to unraveling new forms of sustainable geoenergy resources, including the geological controls for energy storage (e.g., CAES, hydrogen, CO2 and geothermal). Motivated by the urge to provide innovating forms of geoenergy storage that can contribute to mitigate the effects of energy poverty and dependence of populations, underpinned by sound scientific geological knowledge, the key research topics include: 1) The geological controls for Subsurface Compressed Air Energy Storage; 2) The role of ancient, buried volcanos on continental margins as safe and permanent CO2 sinks; and 3) The tectono-stratigraphic evolution of continental margins. RP has a mixed career profile of over 25 years working for industry and in academia. RP graduated in Geology from Faculdade de Ciências - Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL) in 1996, completing his MSc in Dynamic Geology - Stratigraphy and Sedimentology in this same institution in 2002. Along with the MSc studies, RP initiated his teaching activity at Évora University (1998-1999), and in 2000 initiated is career in the energy sector as Exploration Geologist for PARTEX Oil and Gas. During 2013-2017, RP was seconded to Petroleum Development Oman - PDO, returning later to Portugal, as Senior Exploration Geologist until 2021. During this period (2008-2013), RP pursued with his research activities as part-time PhD from Cardiff University (UK). From 2004-2006, RP was invited lecturer to teach part of the Petroleum Geology BSc discipline at FCUL, and more recently to lecture in Sedimentary Basins MSc in Geology. In industry, RP participated in projects leading to economic discoveries in salt-bearing regions, such as Brazil (pre-salt, Santos Basin), Angola and Oman, by performing full-cycle analysis of prospect maturation, including 2D/3D seismic interpretation, borehole analysis, petrophysics, quantitative interpretation, risk analysis under a play-based exploration framework. Main areas of expertise include the geodynamic evolution of passive margins, tectono-stratigraphy of rift basins, salt tectonic controls and tectono-magmatic interplay on depositional systems, in multiple regions worldwide, such as the West Iberian Margin (Portugal), Santos Basin (Brazil), Oman, and the Kwanza Basin (Angola). Throughout his career, RP demonstrated leadership skills by mentoring numerous young professionals and supervising 4 MSc and 2 PhD students (ongoing). RP established his scientific independence as Principal Investigator by promoting and implementing joint industry-academia research projects resulting peer-reviewed publications and communication in international conferences. During his career RP was founding member of Associação Portuguesa de Geocientistas e Engenheiros (APGEP), is currently coordinating member of the Sedimentary Basins Group (GRESBASE) of Sociedade Geológica de Portugal, and member of the geoscience communication collective Sm-Ar-Te-F-O-Ne.
