Sílvia Carvalho obtained her degree in chemical engineering in 2001 from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST-UL), Portugal. In the same year, she joined Professor Rita Delgado's group at the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica (ITQB NOVA) having started her PhD two years later at the same group and concluding it in 2007. During this time, she got knowledge in the synthesis of macrocycles and cryptands, and in various techniques used for the characterization of molecules and supramolecular systems (potentiometry, UV-vis, NMR (Nuclear magnetic resonance) and EPR (Electron paramagnetic resonance) spectroscopy). In 2008, she got a post-doc grant from FCT to work at the Molecular Modelling and Computational Biophysics group at the University of Aveiro Molecular. During this time (2008-2014), she developed new skills by learning molecular modelling techniques molecular dynamics simulation (Amber Molecular Dynamics Package) and quantum mechanics calculations (Gaussian software). In 2016, she worked at the Molecular Biophysics group at the Faculty of Sciences University of Lisbon where she developed small molecules for anion binding and transmembrane transport. During this period (2016-2019) she also had the opportunity to participate in projects involving essential oils. From 2020-2022, she works at CERENA-IST in the development of materials for the storage and delivery of nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) for therapeutical purposes. Since 2022, she is the CERENA´s technician operation with the X-ray nanotomograph. During her career path, S. Carvalho published 28 papers in international peer-review journals and gave an H-index of 13 (Web of Science). She participated in several national and international meetings and received a poster prize award. Additionally, she participated in 9 research projects. S. Carvalho supervised 2 MSc dissertations and 3 works of course completion of LSc/BSc and gave classes of chemistry at the Faculty of Sciences University of Lisbon as an Invited Professor.
