António Ribeiro is Professor at University of Coimbra and he is a researcher affiliated to Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (I3S). Trained in Pharmacy, he teaches Pharmaceutical Technology and nanotechnology at the School of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra. He has acquired a solid foundation in the domain of micro and nanoencapsulation at the University Paris V (Prof. JC Chaumeil) and McGill University (Prof. RJ Neufeld). His research has been focused on the micro and nanoencapsulation of biologically active materials including cells, enzymes, nucleotides, genomic DNA, and therapeutic peptides and proteins. His accumulated experience on drugs’ formulation allowed him in 2014 to develop pharmaceutical implants for extended release of drugs in a collaboration with pharmaceutical industry. He has supervised more than 30 postgraduate students some of them either as visiting schoolar at University of Paris V in 2016 or Invited Researcher by Universities of Pernambuco and Piaui in Brazil between 2013-2015. António Ribeiro has worked for more than 20 years on development of drug delivery systems, including micro-and nanocarriers, biodegradable polymeric, and research leading to the publication of more than 100 articles 10 book chapters. His awards include several Most cited and downloaded papers from Elsevier. His research has been funded by the Portuguese Government Research Foundation (FCT), Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, FLAD and other agencies. He is the author of highly-cited experimental papers in the domain of micro- and nanocapsulation and his main focus at this time is on design of nanodelivery systems for nucleic acids towards therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative diseases.
