Joana Portugal Pereira is an Assistant Professor at the department of Energy Planning, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (PPE/COPPE/UFRJ). She is a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Environmental Policy, Imperial College London (CEP/ICL) and an Invited Assistant Professor at the department of Mechanical Engineering, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa (DEM/IST/UL). She is a Lead Author of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) and the UNEP Emission Gap Report (2020 and 2021). Previously, Joana was a Senior Scientist at the IPCC Working Group III on Mitigation of Climate Change and acted as an author and editor of the IPCC Special Reports on Global Warming of 1.5C and Climate and Land Use. She has a 11-year work experience in the field of sustaianble food systems, energy modelling, climate mitigation policy. Her research focus on the interdisciplinary frontier of food systems sciences and its interactions with sustainable development goals priorities. Dr Joana has co-authored 29 peer-reviewed scientific articles in top-ranked international journal (10 as corresponding author), seven book chapters and edited one global assessment book with overall more than 3300 citations (G. Scholar). Her h-index is 23 (Google Scholar) (15 in Scopus), which is outstanding for a researcher with her profile. She has supervised 16 master theses and seven doctoral dissertations. She has been Juri in 12 PhD vivas and 7 MSc theses. Reaching beyond a purely academic public, Dr Portugal Pereira has written 35 policy reports about resilient and low carbon agriculture, climate innovation strategies and societal transformations to the Asian Development Bank Institute and the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology. She was an advisor on the Portuguese Climate Law, the Brazilian International Maritime Organisation (IMO) delegation and the Brazilian Government in defining its 2015 National Determined Contribution (NDC), and two Brazilian State governments (PE and MG) in designing their climate neutrality strategies. She has been a co-Principal Investigator and a task leader in 15 international interdisciplinary projects and a PI in two research projects with industrial businesses, policymakers and international organisations in Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America and Caribbean regions. She has coordinated project consortiums funded by the UK-Trust Fund, UK-NERC, EU-Horizon2020, Global Environmental Facility (GEF) trust fund, World Resource Institute, SITRA and GIZ. Her international recognition has been reinforced by being a member of three scientific societies and an Associate/Advisory Editor in the Environmental Science and Policy (ISSN: 1462-9011) and the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Transition Elsevier journals (ISSN: 2667-095X). As a recognition of her leading role in the field, she was an invited keynote speaker in 11 scientific conferences and high-level policy meetings and delivered more than 30 interviews in TV, radio and newspaper channels. Joana holds a M.Sc. degree in Environmental Engineering with specialisation in bioenergy (University of Lisbon) (2006), and a Ph.D. in Urban Engineering (The University of Tokyo) (2011), with emphasis on life cycle assessment modelling of alternative fuels.
