Ana Margarida Gorito Gonçalves

Ana M. Gorito (AMG) graduated in Environmental Engineering by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP): she received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. diplomas in July 2016 and May 2022, respectively. Her Ph.D., entitled "Micropollutants in aquaculture: constructed wetlands and advanced oxidation technologies as prospective treatments", was funded through a scholarship by Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). The Ph.D. experimental work was developed at the Laboratory of Separation and Reaction Engineering - Laboratory of Catalysis and Materials (LSRE-LCM) - that now integrates the Associate Laboratory in Chemical Engineering (ALiCE) -, and at the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR). After the Ph.D., AMG joined the CIIMAR team as Researcher of Nature Project focused on the role of natured based solutions to mitigate aquatic pollution (March 2022 - March 2023). Since April 2023, she is working at LSRE-LCM as a contracted researcher of a European Research Council (ERC) project studying the chirality as a tool to develop safer medicines for the environment. Her main research activities have been based on: 1) the removal of micropollutants from water/wastewater by wetlands and/or advanced oxidation technologies; 2) the development of analytical methods for analysis of micropollutants in environmental samples; 3) toxicity assays and 4) periodic monitoring (sampling campaigns and analysis) of the water quality in different environments. AMG participated in several scientific projects. She has her research published through 9 articles, 6 of which as first author, in peer-reviewed ISI-indexed international journals ((h-index 5; > 340 citations; Scopus, January 2024) and has participated in several international and national conferences with more than 25 communications. AMG was also involved in many outreach activities, such as the dissemination of science and knowledge transfer (e.g., CIIMAR/FCUP Open Days, and UP Science Exhibition) and the organization of national and international conferences (e.g., DCE21, Bioremid19, EMEC18, 2nd AOPs Summer School, etc.). Additionally, she was member of the FEUP Pedagogic Council and Environmental Engineering M.Sc. and Ph.D. Monitoring Committees. Recently, she also started supervising students and reviewing articles for ISI journals such as CEJ and ESPR.
