Paolo Stellino is researcher at the NOVA Institute of Philosophy (IFILNOVA) since 2018 and invited assistant professor at the Department of Philosophy (Faculty of Human and Social Sciences [FCSH], NOVA University of Lisbon) since 2019. He teaches the following two courses: “Philosophy and Cinema” (Master degree in Aesthetics and Artistic Studies) since 2018 and “Introduction to Ethics (through Film)” (English Curricula – Social Sciences and Humanities Track) since 2019. Having written a European PhD thesis on Nietzsche and Dostoevsky (University of Valencia, 2010, summa cum laude) and having focused his post-doc on Nietzsche (IFILNOVA, 2012-2017), in the last five years his work mainly focuses on philosophy of suicide and philosophy of film. Having published the book “Nietzsche and Dostoevsky: On the Verge of Nihilism” (Peter Lang, 2015: https://www.peterlang.com/document/1053256; Greek translation Govostis, 2020), he worked from 2015 to 2020 on a book dedicated to Kant’s, Schopenhauer’s, Nietzsche’s, and Wittgenstein’s approaches to and views of suicide. The book was published in 2020 by Palgrave Macmillan with the title “Philosophical Perspectives on Suicide: Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Wittgenstein” (https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-53937-5). Stellino is currently co-editing with Michael Cholbi the Oxford Handbook of the Philosophy of Suicide (Oxford University Press, expected 2024). He also recently co-authored a paper on The Stoics and Nietzsche on voluntary death (Epoché: A Journal for the History of Philosophy, 26/1, 2021: 89-108; https://doi.org/10.5840/epoche202189191). At the same time, Stellino has focused his recent work on philosophy of film, writing papers or book chapters on philosophical aspects of the work of directors such as W. Herzog (DOI: 10.14648/97255; also Routledge, forth.), A. Hitchcock (de Gruyer, forth.), and Bong Joon-ho (Brill, forth.). In recent years, Stellino has also co-edited the following books: Nietzsche et le relativisme (Ousia, 2019), Bioart et éthique (CQFD, 2019), and Violence and Nihilism (de Gruyter, 2022, forth.). Stellino he is currently member of several Nietzsche research groups (Lisbon Nietzsche Group, Hyper Nietzsche, Groupe International de Recherche sur Nietzsche, Seminario Permanente Nietzscheano) and associate member of the “Centre d’Ethique Contemporaine” and the “Centre de Recherches Interdisciplinaires en Sciences humaines et Sociales” of the University of Montpellier. He has served as reviewer for Bloomsbury and Lexington Books as well as for several academic journals, including Journal of Nietzsche Studies. He is supervising several Master Degree and PhD theses.
