Carolina Ferreira is currently a PhD student enrolled at the Health Sciences Program from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, in the Institute of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics , after being awarded a FCT PhD grant (2021.05312.BD) with the project "Blueberry leaf biomass: a nutraceutical for Multiple Sclerosis’ relief by targeting the gut-immune-CNS axis", under the supervision of Flávio Reis, Sofia Viana and Miguel Castelo-Branco. Previously, in the same Faculty she concluded a Master's degree in Biomedical Research, in the branch of Neurosciences, preceded by a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from the University of Coimbra. Her master thesis entitled "Preclinical evaluation of the therapeutic potential of Vaccinium corymbosum L. (blueberry) leaf biomass in experimental Multiple Sclerosis" was developed at the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR) - Faculty of Medicine from Coimbra University (FMUC). Both degrees have provided her with solid knowledge in animal experimentation, molecular and biological sciences supported by the practice of distinct techniques such as PCR, Western Blot, and microscopy, among others. Being part of the research group "Insulin Resistance and Diabetic Angiopathy", coordinated by Flávio Reis, she developed research work related to therapeutic and nutraceutical approaches in the prevention and/or treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, using animal models of cuprizone-induced demyelination. She has been involved in several preclinical research projects, such as "FRUTIFY: Use of blueberry juice as a nutraceutical strategy targeting gut dysbiosis to prevent the progression from prediabetes to diabetes" [PTDC/SAU-NUT/31712/2017], funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), and "Remielinization promoting strategies for an animal model of Multiple Sclerosis" [INOVC2020-SAAC-CENTRO-46-2016-01-5625], funded by INOVC 2020. During her research carrier, she had the opportunity to author three review-papers published in international peer-reviewed journals. Furthermore, Carolina has been an active communicator of her research outputs by participating in several national meetings resulting in 4 oral communications as first author. Alongside her research activity, Carolina actively contributed to the laboratory training of undergraduate and graduate students. Likewise,she participates in a project under a confidentiality agreement, related with the development of a "Semi-solidformulation for voluntary oral administration of bioactive compounds in rodents", which is currently under an International Patent Application (no PCT/IB2021/053124). In 2020, she attained Functions A+B for manipulation and design of animal experimental protocols, certified by DGAV, the National Authority for Regulation of Animal Research. Carolina was also involved in an awarded distinction with the 1st Place in the Sustainable Campus Network competition - "From linear to circular ideas".
