Rafaela Cardoso. Full Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon University, Portugal. PhD in Civil Engineering by IST, in 2009 with the thesis Hydro-mechanical Behaviour of Compacted Marls (Manuel Rocha Award 2013) under the supervision of Prof. E. Maranha das Neves (IST, Lisbon, Portugal) and Prof. E. E. Alonso (UPC, Barcelona, Spain). MSc in Structural Engineering in 2003 (MOP Award 2005) (IST, Lisbon) under the supervision of Prof. M. Lopes and Prof. R. Bento (IST, Lisbon, Portugal). Has the Habilitation degree since 2019 from Lisbon University. Has 34 papers in international ISI/Scopus journals, 1 book, 4 book chapters in international publications and more than 50 international conference papers. Invited for 19 lectures (4 national and 15 international). PI of three National Research Projects (one ongoing) and member of several national research projects. Participation in consultancy projects for exterior entities. Responsible for 6 Advanced Training courses in Civil Engineering organized by FUNDEC. Associate Editor of ISI journal Engineering Geology and member of the reviewer board of Soils and Rocks, and of the editorial board of ISI journal Transportation Geotechnics. Reviewer for several ISI journals. Member of scientific committees of several international conferences and chair of the 4th European Conference on Unsaturated Soils, E-UNSAT2020. Portuguese representative on the Technical Committee TC106 - Unsaturated Soils - of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, ISSMFE. Supervisor of 8 PhD theses (4 ongoing), 47 MSc theses (2 ongoing) and 2 Post-doc students. Is the head of Geotechnical Laboratory of the Department of Civil Engineering at IST. Main research interests are focused on Biocementation as soil improvement technique and on the Electro-Chemo-Hydro-mechanical behaviour of clays and structured materials considering their degree of saturation, constitutive modeling of natural and artificially cemented geomaterials considering structure loss caused by stress and suction cycles, soil treatment techniques, soil suction measurement (in situ and in the laboratory) and numerical simulation of soil-atmosphere interaction considering the unsaturated behaviour of soils.
