Paulo is a computational and molecular biologist specializing in multi-omics approaches to study transcriptomic and epigenomic changes, with a strong background in biochemistry, microscopy, and image analysis. He holds a BSc and MSc in Biochemistry from the University of Lisbon - Faculdade de Ciências (UL-FCUL, 2009-2014). After completing his PhD with Prof. Martin Loose at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) in 2020, Paulo joined Prof. Ana Rita Grosso's lab at UNL-FCT in Portugal as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Bioinformatics. During his PhD, Paulo developed a hybrid skill set combining wet lab experiments and computational work, including in vitro experiments, high-resolution microscopy, and quantitative image analysis. His first manuscript (Nat. Comm., 2019) revealed a mechanism by which bacterial proteins enhance cell division precision. Paulo also gained proficiency in programming, machine learning, and built high-throughput pipelines for analyzing dynamic protein networks, demonstrating their application in various cellular contexts (1 paper and 1 book chapter). Throughout his PhD, Paulo was actively involved in grant writing, outreach, teaching, and mentoring, including lecturing programming classes, mentoring interns, and serving as graduate student representative. He was awarded the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds PhD fellowship. In Prof. Ana Rita Grosso's lab, Paulo received a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (HORIZON-MSCA-2021-PF-01/101066912) to study mechanisms of aberrant transcription in human tissues. His research revealed that transcription readthrough is widespread across healthy human tissues, not limited to disease contexts (Comm. Bio. 2024). Paulo performed complex bioinformatic analyses, including splicing variants, chromatin accessibility, and R-loop presence. Paulo has expanded his scientific network through collaborations with research groups such as BIH Berlin, MDC Berlin, iMM Lisbon, IST Austria, and IBB-IST Lisbon, contributing his expertise in multi-omics analyses (RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, Exome-Seq, Allele-specific data) and image analysis. His work has been recognized in several publications. His collaboration with Simão Rocha (IST-IBB, Lisbon, PT) has been pivotal in profiling XCI erosion in human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), addressing a significant barrier to their clinical application. In line with this work, Paulo was awarded an FCT-CEEIND, allowing him to begin a position of higher independence at Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB, IST-ID, Lisbon).
