Beatriz Fonseca (BF) earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Faculty of Science of University of Porto in 2021 and presently at the final stage of her master's degree at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS), School of Medicine of the University of Minho, with thesis delivered and awaiting for the defense day. During her bachelor’s in biology (2018-2021), BF pursued multidisciplinary learning. This included an extracurricular internship titled "Quantification of Macroalgae and Plastic Debris on Intertidal Sandy Beaches" supervised by Marcos-Rubal Garcia, an internship at CIIMAR under Agostinho Antunes supervision, and a bachelor internship entitled: "Ultra Violet-A supplementation to modulate the photosynthetic performance and nutritional traits in Lactuca sativa" at iB2 under Nuno Mariz-Ponte and Maria Conceição Santos supervision, wich resulted in a poster presentation entitled “UV-A Influence on growth and production of secondary metabolites of Lactuca sativa“ at IJUP. BF was a former member of the iB2 Team/LAVQ - REQUIMTE (2020-2021). In 2021, BF obtained a Laboratory Animal Science (LAS) certificate to conduct research with rodents and completed an advanced course in "Immunometabolism". At ICVS, BF joined the Pathogen Evolutionary Genomics and Experimental Genetics (PEvoGen) team for her dissertation thesis under Isabel Veiga supervision, team coordinator and malaria research group leader. Her research primarily concentrated on molecular biology, genome-editing strategies, and the problematic of Malaria drug resistance. Throughout this project, BF contributed as the first author to a scientific paper (DOI: https://doi.org/10.21814/jus.5702) with the title: "Breaking Boundaries in Malaria Research: Design of a Genetic Tool for High-Throughput Gametocidal Drug Screening". Additionally, she presented her work through two scientific poster presentations titled "Breaking Boundaries in Malaria Research: Design of a Genetic Tool for High-Throughput Gametocidal Drug Screening" at SCI (Semana da Ciência e Inovação) in Braga and the poster "Engineering Human Malaria Parasites for High-Throughput Multistage Drug Screening" at the XVI Jornadas Ibéricas de Genética e Biotecnologia held at UTAD in 2024 for which she received the Best Poster award. With the desire to continue in malaria research, presently she is furthering her thesis dissertation work at ICVS, during which she has delivered a seminar at the Bioinformatics advanced course, worked on a funded international project in collaboration with Karolinska Institute to understand the role of mutations in KAF156 antimalarial response and collaborated in organizing outreach activities of the PevoGen team, with the latest being for over 70 students of Colégio Teresiano under the theme “DNA technology”. Concurrently, she is undertaking a continuous education course at FCUP, concentrating on life laboratory techniques like molecular biology and fluorescence microscopy, and preparing for her thesis defense. Moreover, BF has organized multiple lectures and events (Jornadas do Mar 2019, Dias Abertos 2019, Dias Abertos 2020, Biologia ao fim da tarde, 2020, Mostra UP 2019), supervised bachelor students, and mentored 6 students at FCUP and ICVS. Beatriz is a former NEBUP member and a Journal UMinho Science (JUS) member. In her free time, Beatriz is involved in volunteer activities as a volunteer firefighter, having completed an Emergency Ambulance Course (TAS).
