Nanoporous Materials The adsorption of gases and vapours in porous solids aiming to study the texture, surface chemistry, and molecular sieve properties of nanoporous materials, mainly zeolites, clay based, and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are the current scientific interests of João Pires. His work also includes the synthesis and modification of the textural and surface chemistry properties of nanoporous materials with potential use in catalysis and selective adsorption (eg. gas purification and separation) as well as the Chemical and Physical characterization of these materials. More recently, he has been studying nanoporous materials for the storage and delivery of small molecules with therapeutic effect and the Chemical-Physics that conditionates the adsorption and release of these molecules. He was co-founder of Adsorfoam S.A. (president of general assembly). This "start-up" was created in 2007 and intends to produce filtering media, based in adsorbent materials supported in polymers, to improve the indoor air quality. He is co-founder (2018) of Delox - Investigação, Processos e Equipamentos Científicos, Lda (www.delox.pt). This start-up is based on technology developed in DQB of FCUL. This technology has applications in laboratory and hospital disinfection also having possibilities to be applied in space missions. He co-authored more than 170 publications in scientific indexed journals, having more than 5400 citations and an h-index of 43. He was mentioned in an international study by Standford University as beeing in the top 2% of career-long cited scientists in the subfield of Materials in 2020 and 2021 and, for 2021, also in the top 2% of most cited scientists in that single-year (https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pbio.3000384).
