Letizia Campioni holds a first degree in Biology in 2004 by Università La Sapienza di Roma, IT, and a PhD Degree in Conservation Biology (obtained in 2012/02/24 at the Universidad De Sevilla, Spain). Between 2013 and 2017 she held a postdoctoral position at MARE- Ispa-Instituto Universitário (Lisbon) integrating the group of with Dr P. Catry and where she investigated the ecology and behaviour of long-lived pelagic seabirds before they recruit to the breeding population. From 2018-2023 she was Assistant Researcher (6-year FCT-contract) in the same institution (Ispa) where she has also lectured curricular units within the MSc course in Marine Biology and Conservation (namely: Behavioural ecology and sociobiology 2019-2022) and of the Biology course (Animal behaviour, since 2020-2022). Moreover, since 2019 she is member of the editorial board and editor of the open-access Avocetta Journal of Ornithology (indexed in Scopus) for which she also writes editorials, book and PhD reviews. Since 2023 she is also Board member of CISO (Italian Centre for Ornithological Studies). Her main area of expertise is Behavioural Ecology of long-lived birds (mostly seabirds and raptors). Most of her research focuses on marine ecology, specifically seabirds¿ foraging behaviour and movement ecology as well as intra-specific communication. In the last 5 years she has expanded her interests towards the use of seabirds as bioindicator of environmental quality and ocean health she had integrated in the conservation of endangered seabird species including toxicological and managements aspects. In this regards she is particularly interested in understanding the toxicological impacts of pollution (chemicals and plastic) on the behaviour and physiology of higher trophic level predators. She published 45 articles in international peer-reviewed journals with > 350 co-authors. Over this time, she has also increased her dissemination activities (conference/interview/newspaper/blog/radio) toward a more general audience organising and participating in events aiming at promoting marine literacy (EU Night of Researcher, FIG.a intern. Science Festival). She (co)-supervised 7 students (MSc and undergraduate theses) with 2 ongoing. She awarded 3 small research grants to develop short-term projects and 2 grants for Educational Outreach projects. She was Principal Investigator in 2 conservation-research projects and participated as researcher in 6. Over her career she accumulated substantial experience serving as consultant for research and non-governmental institutions. Concurrently, she visited, carrying out fieldwork activities and worked in Portugal, Spain, Bermuda, Falkland Islands, Madeira Islands, Argentina, Italy, Finland, among others, where she collaborated with governmental and private institutions, NGOs, research centres and Universities (CSIC Spain, BirdLife International, ISPRA Italy, ECC Canada, DENR Gov. Bermuda, SAERI Falklands) with whom she published large-scale researches and data.

2024/11/01 - 2026/08/15 Agreement service with Committee On the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). Contract will require Letizia Campioni to lead the writing of the Bermuda petrel (Pterodroma cahow) Status Report for the evaluation of the species as protected species in Canada. Committee On the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), Canada
2024/11/01 - 2025/01/01 Agreement service: The aim of this study is to assess the risk of accidental capture of seabirds in the Aveiro-Nazaré SPA, with the aim of gauging the spatial and temporal overlap between seabirds and commercial fishing (<15m). The fishing areas used by vessels operating trawls, purse seines, gillnets, trammel nets, anchored longlines and surface longlines should be generated. The areas will be obtained for each phenological period of each species. The contract will require Letizia Campioni to lead the analysis. Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves, Portugal
2021/11/16 - 2021/11/16 I have been invited to participate in workshops as expert in seabirds (petrels) to help develop guidance for seabird conservation in the face of climate change in Europe. The output of the workshop the following document: Climate Change Vulnerability and Potential Conservation Actions: Seabirds in the North-East Atlantic : ZSL.org/seabird-guidelines: https://issuu.com/zoologicalsocietyoflondon/docs/seabirds_in_ne_atlantic_climate_change ZSL Institute of Zoology and University of Cambridge , United Kingdom
2019/12/17 - 2020/03/31 Agreement service: Identify potential threats to the species in the marine environment, including the spatial variability of nutrients and pollutants (i.e., mercury) in relation to individual habitat use across oceanic regions. Specifically, the contract required me to deploy tracking devices and analyse eggshell, blood and feather samples to look at nutrient values and contaminant loads. Environment and Climate Change Canada, Canada
2016 - 2016 Invited as specialist for seabirds to assessing Marine Higher Predator Risk from the developing Falklands Islands Hydrocarbon Industry. The workshop was organised by SEARI under the "GAP project. South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute, Falkland Islands
