Vanessa Modesto

I hold a BsC in Biology (2009) and a MSc in Applied Ecology (2011) both concluded at the Science and Technology Department of University of Coimbra and, a PhD (2020) in Evolution, Biodiversity and Ecology concluded at the Biology Department of University of Minho in collaboration with Centre of Molecular and Environmental Biology (CBMA) and Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR, University of Porto). During my BsC and MSc, I collaborated in several projects EEMA, WISER and Reconnect (Science and Technology Department/UC). Between my MSc and PhD, I worked as a researcher in 3 projects: (1) volunteer in NISTRACKS (CIIMAR/UP, 4 months), (2) MsC research grant in SIGNAL (CIIMAR/UP, 1 year) and, (3) Research internship in ECO-IAS (CIIMAR/UP, 1 year). Nowadays, I have a postdoctoral position in the project of PRIN 2018 research ENTERPRISING, Interactions between hydrodynamics flows and biotic communities in fluvial ecosystems: advancement in discharge monitoring and understanding of processes relevant for ecosystem sustainability by the development of novel technologies with field observations and laboratory testing, at the CNR Water Research Institute (IRSA), Verbania (VB), Italy. During all my scientific path, I diversified the tools used to understand freshwater ecology (focusing on invasive bivalves and native mussels) and developed skills in physiological and behavioural methods, modelling techniques and stable isotope analysis. I have a total of 6 published manuscripts in indexed journals (3 of them as the first author in Journal of Molluscan Studies, Fish and Fisheries and Science of the Total Environment). Other three publications, resulting from my PhD, are submitted in indexed journals: one with minor revisions in Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, and two with major revisions in Hydrobiology. I participated in 10 national and international congresses where I presented oral (9) or poster (4) communications. I am currently a co-supervisor of a Master student. In early 2020, I participated on the COST Action CA18239 to incorporate a working group within the project. I won a PhD Scholarship for four years, 1 Travel grant to attend training school under COST Action ES1304 and 2 Travel grants to attend international congresses (EUROMAL and FMCS). I engaged in several outreach activities, namely talks in schools, activities in kindergartens and general community engaging activities. I also participated on the organization of ECSA47 scientific meeting. Besides academic-related jobs, I also was a teacher in teaching centres for students between 6 and 23 years-old.
