Márcia Sousa has a Bachelor's degree in Biology and a Master's in Biotechnology for Health Sciences, both by UTAD (Vila Real, Portugal). Since the conclusion of her Master's, she worked in 1 project as a researcher fellow at FCUP (Porto; Portugal). After that, she did a volunteer internship at BacTdrugs Lab in FFUP (Porto; Portugal), working with Lactobacillus spp. and Gardnerella spp., where she is currently a Ph.D. student. Her degree program is in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Specialization in Microbiology) with a FCT grant entitled "Exploring the Diversity and Features of Gardnerella spp.: Implications for Interactions in the Female Urogenital Microbiome and the Host". Her research focuses on the Female Urogenital Microbiota, showcasing her expertise in bacterial phenotypic and biochemical characterization. Márcia has developed skills in gene and genome analysis, as well as phylogenetic analysis to describe novel species. While specializing in this field, she maintains a broader interest in the human microbiome, microorganism interactions, and their implications for health and disease. In her academic achievements, Márcia has published three scientific papers, secured a spot in a Ph.D. summer school (2022), organized eight scientific events, and actively participated in over 30.
