I an a researcher at RISE-Health@FMUP. I study chronic pelvic pain mechanism, aiming to find new treatment opportunities and biomarkers (follow-up and diagnostic). I am also interested in understanding how human behavior influences chronic pelvic pain, in order to prevent it or, at least, prevent flare episodes. Together with a team of Urologists, we have repurposed the use of a medication that is effective in a subpopulation of chronic pelvic patients. At the translational level, I have developed new animal models to work in Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome. I was PI of a AUGS project, work package co-leader of IMI PainCare project (ended 03/2023), and an was responsible investigator of a FCT project. I also investigate the mechanisms that lead to lower urinary tract symptoms. I developed translation work both in the detrusor underactivity (DU) and bladder overactivity (OAB) fields. I have worked with animal models that mimic the pathology associated with DU (an animal model of BOO and an ageing model). Recently, I have identified an animal model for the study of OAB (stress model in males). I was a researcher in the Incomb European project and of Astellas Urethra project in close collaboration with urologists. I have published seminal papers in this field (some with more than 100 citations) and I have ongoing collaboration with national and international scientists. Have DGAV authorization to perform scientific experiments working with animals and I am obtaining the certificate of Clinical Investigator.

  1. FAAH Inhibitor Improves Function of Inflamed Bladders by Modulation of Anandamide and Palmitoylethanolamide. Introduction: We aim to study the effect of fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) blockade on bladder hyperactivity and on fatty acid amides levels during cystitis. Material and Methods: Cystitis was induced in female Wistar rats using 5 mg/mL lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Control group were intravesical instilled with saline. LPS and control groups received intravenously (caudal vein) during cystometry:. 2017. 4. Transient receptor potential channels in bladder function. The transient receptor potential (TRP) superfamily of cationic ion channels includes proteins involved in the transduction of several physical and chemical stimuli to finely tune physiological functions. In the urinary bladder, they are highly expressed in, but not restricted to, primary afferent neurons. The urothelium and some interstitial cells also express several TRP channels.
