João Vareda received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Coimbra in 2022. In 2024 he was featured in the list of the top 2% of the world’s most cited scientists (August 2024 data-update for "Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators"). He was awarded, as IR, with the Projeto Semente de Investigação Interdisciplinar 2023 from University of Coimbra and Santander, in the Climate, Energy and Mobility strategic area (funded with 20 000€). In this project (2023) composite aerogel electrolytes for solid state sodium batteries were developed. Joao’s PhD began after receiving a grant from the Calouste Gubenkian Foundation under the scope of the Programa de Estímulo à Investigação 2015 program (funded with 10 000€), with the project AeroMCatch - Silica Aerogels for Remediation of Soils Contaminated with Heavy Metal, developed from January 2016 to February 2017. In 2017, Dr. Vareda was granted with a doctoral fellowship by FCT (2018-2021) with the workplan Environmental Cleaning and Recovery of Heavy Metals via Functionalization of Silica Aerogels. Dr. Vareda has developed materials for different applications: silica-smart polymer hybrid aerogel composites and fiber-silica composite aerogels for thermal insulation in high performance applications; organically modified silica aerogels for adsorption and recovery of heavy metals; hybrid chitosan-silica aerogels as adsorbents for metals and antibiotics; aerogel composites with sodium ion conduction at room temperature, for potential application in new batteries, and is currently studying modified biopolymers for new therapies. So, João’s work has mostly focused on the development and application of materials, namely aerogels synthesis, functionalization and characterization of materials, and sorptive processes. The different works he has developed have aligned with making the economy more circular and tackling different environmental issues. Dr. Vareda was involved in 6 research projects and has co-authored several peer-reviewed papers (22 papers published). These publications are mainly indexed to the Chemistry, Materials Science and Chemical Engineering areas (Scopus). He has presented several communications at conference meetings and seminars several times.
