João Firmino-Machado is graduated in Medicine (University of Minho Medical School), obtained a master’s degree in Statistics (University of Minho Sciences School), a Post-Graduation in Health Management (University of Minho Economics and Management School), a Post-Graduation in Clinical Research (Harvard Medical School) and completed his PhD in Public Health (University of Porto Medical School, 2019). He has been working as a public health medical doctor during the last five years at local level (Porto, Portugal), regional level (north region of Portugal), so as in international organizations (World Health Organization). These positions allowed him to acquire knowledge and training in the following fields: i) health planning; ii) prevention and control of communicable diseases; iii) design and implementation of programs to tackle non-communicable diseases. He is an integrated member of the Non-Communicable Diseases Epidemiology research group, within the Epidemiology Research Unit of the Institute of Public Health – University of Porto (EPIUnit-ISPUP), where he conducts research in cancer screening programs. He is an Invited Assistant Professor at University of Porto Medical School, where he teaches epidemiology to medical students. He supervised three master dissertations. So far, he published 24 articles in peer-reviewed journals and was an invited speaker in over 40 national and international conferences, obtaining four prizes of best oral communication/poster and three prizes of best research project proposals. Currently, Firmino-Machado is coordinating a population-based program that aims to prevent cognitive decline in patients with mild cognitive impairment, using non-pharmacological interventions (cognitive training, physical activity, nutrition education, adaption to memory loss, diagnosis and correction of hearing impairment). During the last three months, Firmino-Machado designed and implemented a program of early detection of COVID-19 in vulnerable groups in Western Porto and Gaia (Portugal), screening over 5000 patients in 100 institutions. Additionally, he led a team of 25 people, responsible for clinical follow-up of 1000 COVID-19 cases and identification of over 3000 high-risk contacts.
