João Guimarães has a bachelor´s degree in Biology from the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP). Thereafter, he obtained a MSc degree in Neurobiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), in November of 2021. His work was published and presented at 5 international and national scientific meetings, where he presented 3 posters and 2 oral communications, being awarded best poster communication in one of them. Furthermore, he mentored several bachelor´s and master´s students and was a tutor of mathematics and science to younger students in the hopes to instigate the sparkle that led him to his scientific career. He also organised and taught the "Freezing Life Workshop" on embryonic development, at the international conference YES MEETING in 2022. He was a scientific researcher at the Pain Neurobiology group at i3s, where he has a paper as a first author published in Neural Development and a second paper that is under final preparation. Currently, he is a PhD student at the Synapse Biology group at i3s under the supervision of Dr. Matthew Holt. He has fellowship on the project H2020-WIDESPREAD-2018-2020-6-951923_NCBio. His focus is on identifying astrocyte secreted proteins and understand their influence on synaptogenesis.
