Curriculum Vitae

Fernando Fonseca is an urban researcher with skills in spatial analysis, sustainable planning and sustainable mobility. He concluded his graduation in Geography in 1997 at the University of Porto, completed his MSc in 2006 in Municipal Engineering at the University of Minho (UM), and concluded his PhD in 2014 in Civil Engineering at UM. During the PhD, he explored the use of agent-based models in urban planning at a regional scale. The work included multi-criteria analysis, fuzzy logic, programming on NetLogo, GIS analysis and spatial simulation. In the period 2013-2014, he was an invited professor at UM, teaching three different BSc and MSc courses, including one international MSc course. In the period 2015-2020, Fernando Fonseca was a post-doctoral researcher at the Centre of Territory, Environment and Construction (CTAC), UM, in two research projects. The first (2015-2017) was a national project funded by FCT (SC4Life Cities), while the second (2017- 2020) was a European research project funded by JPI Urban Europe (Smart Pedestrian Net). In the first project, his research activity has been primary focused on mitigating the impacts of human activities in urban environments, particularly in terms of noise and air pollution. In the second project, the main goal was to promote the use of the pedestrian mode for short urban trips and to create more pedestrian-friendly cities. In 2021, Fernando Fonseca was a post-doctoral researcher at the Center for Computer Graphics (CCG), UM, in the context of the research "Walkability as an urban planning and urban design problem: understanding the walking in the urban environment and mobility". Since March 2022, he is an Auxiliary Researcher of CTAC on the topics of urban sustainability and geosimulation tools. During the last eight years of research activities, his focus has been on studying ways to make our cities more resilient, sustainable, livable and healthier. Fernando Fonseca is author and co-author of dozens of papers in peer-review journals and conferences. He is Guest editor of the indexed journal (WoS, Scopus) Sustainability and Planning Practice & Research for the topics of sustainable mobility and sustainable urban development. He is also one of the editors of the Topical Collection "Towards more walkable cities" of the journal Sustainability. He has been invited to participate in various national and international workshops and talks and made dozens of reviews for international journals and conferences. He has been invited for scholarships juries, scientific consultancy and supervising thesis. He has also experience in preparing and submitting applications to national and international calls, with international and national research projects selected for funding. Recently, he promoted the creation of an international network group of researchers for strengthening the research on sustainable mobility and sustainable urban development.
