Carla Ambrósio Garcia is a Collaborating Researcher at CEIS20, the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies of the University of Coimbra. Previously she was a Lecturer in Film and Media Studies at the British University in Egypt. Before this she taught at Kings College London, Royal Holloway University of London, University of Suffolk, and University of Bedfordshire. She has a PhD in Film Studies from Kings College London, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia in Portugal. Her doctoral project proposed a reconceptualization of the cinema as a thinking space and a space of psychical transformation, grounded in the theory of thinking formulated by the British psychoanalyst Wilfred Bion. This research was published as a book titled Bion in Film Theory and Analysis: The Retreat in Film (Routledge, 2017). Her recent research focuses on Egyptian cinema and heritage studies. She is also a filmmaker, currently working on two parallel film projects: one that investigates uses of heritage in Egyptian cinema, and another that reflects on her experience of living in Egypt.
