My name is Margarida Pacheco, I studied Biochemistry (BSc and MSc) at the University of Minho, Braga, Portugal. During my master thesis I worked on the development and characterization of various protein variants, through genetic engineering, with the objective to improve the stability of a cold-adapted enzyme in acidic pHs. During that year I worked in the areas of microbiology, genetic engineering, bioinformatics and techniques of protein production and characterization. On July 2018 I was awarded with a research fellowship at i3Bs Research Group and my research focus started to change and became closer to biomaterials. My first works at i3Bs were dedicated to the functionalization of polymers (both degradable and non-degradable) for urological applications. In 2019 I engaged the PhD and since October 2019 I have been working on my PhD project which focuses on a comprehensive characterization of biodegradable metal's corrosion and encrustation propensity in urinary tract environment, as well as their biocompatibility and possible antibacterial activity, envisioning the utilization of biodegradable metals, specifically Mg alloys, for biodegradable metallic ureteral stent development.
