one European Research Council (ERC) Grant, and received an FCT PhD Grant in the "Bioengineering and Biotechnology" panel.
Emanuel V. Capela currently holds a position of Junior Researcher at CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials, University of
Aveiro, Portugal. Previously, he worked as MSc Researcher and as Research Assistant at Institute for Bioengeneering and Biosciences
(iBB), Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, Portugal, as PhD student/researcher at CICECO and iBB, and also as
a Guest Researcher at Faculty of Science and Technology (TNW), University of Twente, The Netherlands. He also acquired experience
in the industry, having occupied a position of Research Associate in a biopharmaceutical company – FairJourney Biologics,
S.A. –, and also a position of Innovation Project Manager at Frederico Mendes & Associados – Sociedade de Consultores, Lda.
In the past years, he was dedicated to develop cost-effective and sustainable processes for the up- and/or downstream processing
of several (bio)molecules, especially human antibodies and related biopharmaceuticals. Moreover, he worked with a new class
of alternative solvents, ionic liquids, where his scientific interest devoted to these compounds includes their use as phase-forming
components of separation liquid-liquid systems, or immobilized in solid supports as novel ligands in chromatographic stationary
phases, for application in processes development.
