Raquel Filipa de Almeida Amaral

Raquel Amaral, biologist, PhD in Biosciences. Post-doc researcher at the Bioelectronics & Bioenergy Research Lab. which is a member of the CFE-Centre for Functional Ecology and the Associated Laboratory TERRA, at the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Coimbra. With a two decade experience in the study and cultivation of microalgae and cyanobacteria, she is currently working at the interface of biology and electronics. She has developed skills in cultivating microalgae on multi-electrode arrays (MEAs) for extracellular recordings of low frequency cohort events. Her research is developed in the framework of ERC funded project GREEN, which aims to generate energy from electroactive algae, currently in progress at the lab. She is also developing work with microfluidic strips for the purpose of growing microalgal cells and to be used as water management tools, and is a co-author in a pending patent, related to this work. In her former position, Raquel worked as a post-doc at CIIMAR (Centro Interdisciplinar de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental), University of Porto, in the framework of an European project focused on the Nagoya protocol. Her former path has been the study of microalgae and cyanobacteria in diverse research lines starting in 2003 with studies for the cryopreservation and conservation of these organisms. Her PhD was developed at the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Coimbra, and she went on scientific stays abroad to the Czech Republic and to Germany. The study was focused on the molecular taxonomy and phylogeny of microalgae, which originated the description of new species. Through her scientific path, Raquel also participated in biotechnology projects in the area of microalgal cultivation and prospective screening of bioactive compounds for food and health applications. For a short period of time Raquel developed work in the Botany collection of the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra, during which she completed a second Msc. in museology. Published 13 peer-reviewed papers and 2 book chapters, participated in more than 25 national and international conferences and workshops, including the reknown Materials Research Society Conference, at Seattle. Reviewer for the journals Algal Research and the Journal of Applied Phycology. Supervision of graduate students of Biology and Biochemical degrees, and masters students. Raquel has dedicated to science communication and outreach events in the form of workshops, ad hoc lectures by invitation, European Researchers Night, seminars.

These devices are aimed for bioelectronic studies with adhering neuronal cells.
