Bárbara Leal

Bárbara Leal is a biochemist from Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto that finished her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from ICBAS-UPorto in 24/10/2017. Currently she is attending the Master in Health Economics and Management by Universidade do Porto Faculdade de Economia since 2022. Is Invited Assistant Professor in Universidade do Porto Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar and Técnico Superior in Universidade do Porto Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar. During her PhD thesis she studied the inflammatory pathways involved in development and progression of MTLE, the most refractory form of epilepsy. During her academic and curricular path, she co-authored 30 research papers in peer-review journals, 3 published as first author, and 3 papers as last author. She has also participated in 1 book chapter, about genetics of Epilepsy published in a Portuguese Editor. She has participated in several national and international conferences with more than 100 oral and poster presentations. She is an active science communicator also for the public in general participating in events for high scholl students and general science promotion. She has been part of the research team of 11 national projects, most of them in Epilepsy field, but also in autoimmune diseases. She is the Principal Investigator of an ongoing project studying the epigenetic modulation of monocyte-derived microglial-like cells in human refractory epilepsy. In her scientific activities she has interacted with 195 collaborators. Bárbara Leal actively participates in the training and formation of students in the scientific areas, having been a member of the supervising team of 19 finished graduation works, 2 finished master's theses and 2 finished PhD theses. She is supervisor of 1 master thesis and co-supervisor of 2 doctoral theses in progress. Bárbara Leal's work has received recognition from 12 awards. Currently, she is developing international collaborations with groups of Professor Iscia Lopes Cendes (Campinas University) and Professor Esteban Ballestar (IJC, Barcelona).
